ADHD 4: Managing Transitions

  • 1 Step
clock showing time for change

About

This talk focuses on practical ways to support neurodivergent children — particularly those with ADHD — in managing transitions within the school environment. The strategies shared are flexible and can also be adapted to support smoother transitions at home. By the end of this session, you will be able to: Understand how motivation, values, and behaviour influence student engagement and learning. Recognise the difference between 'sustain' and 'change' talk. Avoid the “righting reflex” and use more supportive, student-centred approaches. Identify common issues with transitions and use effective techniques to support smoother movement between tasks and activities. Use strategies to help students reset and refocus when they become distracted or dysregulated. Support students in getting started with tasks, especially when initiation is a challenge. Help students “park” distracting thoughts so they can remain focused on learning. Apply simple, consistent routines to create a more predictable and supportive learning environment.
